Today, on what would have been the 52nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade and with the onset of a new Trump Administration that has vowed to further dismantle rights to reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy, the California Future of Abortion Council released the following statement:
“As reproductive health, rights, and justice organizations and provider groups contend with the threats posed by the Trump Administration and 119th Congress, the California Future of Abortion Council urges Governor Newsom and allies in the State Legislature to continue to take bold action and make sustained investments to affirm their commitment to protecting reproductive freedom in California.
While abortion access is a constitutional right in our state, the myriad of anticipated hostile federal actions will harm millions of Californians and those forced to travel here for care. These threats will disproportionately impact Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, young people, people with disabilities, and people with low incomes. All people deserve access to affordable, high-quality essential health care and for these reasons, California must do everything in its power to mitigate these harms and safeguard access.
We look forward to continuing to partner with Governor Newsom and the Legislature to ensure the state budget and policies reflect California’s values, meet the needs of people seeking abortion care in our state, and further bolster California’s leadership as a Reproductive Freedom State.”
The “California Future of Abortion Council” (CA FAB Council) is comprised of reproductive freedom and sexual and reproductive health care allies, partners, and leaders. Steering Committee organizations include: Access Reproductive Justice, Black Women for Wellness Action Project, California Coalition for Reproductive Freedom, California Latinas for Reproductive Justice, Essential Access Health, National Health Law Program (NHeLP), Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, Reproductive Freedom for All California, and TEACH. The CA FAB Council works in collaboration with policy makers, researchers, advocates, providers, patients, and key constituents to determine potential challenges in the state and recommend solutions that will continue to provide access and stability for both Californians and those who may seek services here from out of state.
